About McMorran and Gatehouse

We are a team of seven architects providing a personal service for all our clients. The practice commenced in 1984, becoming a partnership in 1990 and a limited company in 2004.

Our aim is to deliver buildings tailor-made to our clients’ requirements. In the process we look to value manage the design brief to ensure that each building is more than the sum of its parts.

Working with existing buildings and their environs convinces us that new buildings must acknowledge their setting by careful ntegration of local building traditions into modern contexts. We believe that new architecture is enriched by the past and that successful regeneration of town and city centres, depends neither upon wholesale conservation or comprehensive redevelopment.

Instead a more holistic approach, learning from the past and utilising modern building techniques where appropriate, will more effectively create an environment, to which the local community can easily relate and in which they feel confident of building a rich, vibrant social and economic life in a rapidly changing world.

Sustainable Architecture

The work of our practice aims to address a broad range of 'sustainability' issues. McMorran and Gatehouse are committed to urban and inner town regeneration.

Our design skills assist clients to successfully redevelop difficult redundant sites to create new homes, new jobs and new community activity that is integral to the life of the existing neighbourhood.

At construction level we aim to design low energy buildings, utilising local skills and local recyclable materials. Natural ventilation, high insulation and low embodied energy are key considerations. A recent school project utilises water extracted and returned from the aquifer for free cooling of sealed music spaces.
